Ask TBM: What are the Most In-Demand Skills This Year?

Digital skills are currently the most in-demand skills in the job market, while IT is the most in-demand job, according to an executive search firm.

Information Technology (IT) remains the sector with the most opportunities, and digital skills are currently the most in-demand skills of employers, even in non-IT related work.

Possessing digital skills is no longer an option but a requirement to remain competitive in today’s world. According to executive search firm Global Executive Solutions Group, IT-related industries currently have high employment demand, and the in-demand skills that employers look for are digital skills, even for non-IT related work. But the company laments that there is a current lack of talents in the digital space, especially for positions requiring more advanced IT skills.

The mismatch highlights the need for the country’s educational institutions to enhance digital education to ensure that the country’s graduates can keep up and compete in the global work space, regardless of their industry.

Digital skills are currently the most in-demand skills in the job market, while IT is the most in-demand job, according to an executive search firm.

Aside from digital know-how, critical thinking and problem solving skills have likewise become necessary qualities in maneuvering in a more complex and dynamic business environment.

What industries and professions currently have high employment demand?

Information Technology (I.T.) related industries such as digital banking, e-commerce, fintech [financial technology], and shared services are highly in demand as digital transformation continues to be a trend.

Same goes for positions that require high digital skills like data analysts, data scientists, digital marketing professionals, and programmers. Specifically, chief marketing officers (CMOs) who are technology driven and well-versed with artificial intelligence (AI).

What sort of skills should people be currently developing and schools should be focusing on to make their students more relevant and marketable?

Basic digital literacy is important. Schools nowadays should provide digital learning programs for their students. In addition to basic digital literacy, schools should focus on critical thinking, data analysis, coding, and digital communication skills.

Emphasizing adaptability and problem solving will help students thrive in an AI-driven landscape. Programs that integrate project-based learning and collaboration will also enhance their ability to work in diverse teams, across industries.

In terms of soft skills, what character/personality traits are employers looking for?

Employers look for agile, resilient, flexible and people-oriented candidates. Strong leadership even in non-managerial roles, can set candidates apart, making interpersonal skills (e.g. EQ) and collaboration key for success.

How easy or challenging is it to match talents versus clients’ requirements these days?

There are still quite a few talents, especially in the digital space. It becomes even more challenging for roles requiring advanced digital skills among candidates. That has been especially hard to find.

How have you been affected by the popularity of job portals such as LinkedIn? What value-added benefits do you offer versus the popular job portals?

While we’ve seen significant effects, our executive search firm provides unique value. We build strong, trust-based relationships between candidates and companies, ensuring professionalism throughout the process. Unlike LinkedIn, we source high-profile candidates from our exclusive network and referrals.

Our added value lies in our thorough candidate assessments, including in-depth interviews and recommendations from previous colleagues at all levels. This allows us to accurately gauge cultural fit. Additionally, our connections with senior professionals who aren’t active on job portals give us access to a talent pool that others might miss.

The recent Gallup survey showed that 64% of Filipinos are watching for or actively seeking a new job. What do you think is the reason for the high percentage of discontent in the work place?

Yes, we frequently encounter these concerns, particularly among job hoppers seeking more fulfilling work environments. Common issues include mismatches in skills and company culture, inadequate leadership opportunities, unsatisfactory compensation, limited career growth, and preferences regarding work arrangements (whether remote, hybrid, or onsite).

Unfortunately, one big important factor we’ve seen is the younger generation’s inability to cope with the stress and demands of the job.
