5 Filipino Startups Taking the Lead in the Fight Against Plastic Pollution
With the theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution,” Philippine Environment Month calls on every Filipino to take part in the fight against plastic pollution.
June 5 marks World Environment Day, a global celebration that urges people to raise awareness and take action to protect the planet. In the Philippines, however, environmental consciousness isn’t limited to a single day—it’s observed throughout the entire month.
The whole month of June has been designated as Philippine Environment Month, and this year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has chosen the theme, “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.”
In celebration of this year’s Philippine Environment Month, The Business Manual has put together a list of Philippine startups that have made it their mission to end plastic pollution in the country.
Green Antz
Founded in 2013, Green Antz tackles plastic pollution through building and housing solutions that integrate eco-friendly practices and green technologies.
As part of their efforts, Green Antz has been launching Eco Hubs in different cities and barangays. The goal of these Eco Hubs is to collect plastic waste and turn them into eco-products such as eco bricks, eco pavers, furniture, and more.
Plastic Credit Exchange
Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX) initially began as a non-profit organization (NGO) that supports environmental protection. Founded in 2019 by Nanette Medved-Po, its aim is to tackle the legacy plastic waste crisis in the country.
In recent years, PCX has focused on PCX Markets, a marketplace that is focused on audited, traceable plastic waste recovery and responsible processing. The marketplace not only caters to the Philippines but also globally.
The Plastic Flamingo
Officially launched in 2018, The Plastic Flamingo is a social enterprise that collects and transforms plastic waste. Through its efforts, plastic waste is turned into sustainable construction materials that can be used to build housing, schools, and shelters.
To date, The Plastic Flamingo has managed more than 1,000 tons of plastic waste and opened more than 250 plastic collection points around the Philippines.
Rezbin
Based in Iloilo, Rezbin was founded in 2023 with a goal to make plastic recycling rewarding for every Filipino thanks to its reward-based system.
Through its mobile app, Rezbin has been able to leverage technology in order to monitor plastic donations made. The app is likewise used to reward points to those who have donated plastic waste.
Salin PH
Single-use plastics make a significant part of plastic pollution in the country, and this is what Salin PH aims to address. Salin PH aims to reduce the packaging waste by deploying reuse, refill, and circular economy solutions.
Its Salin Swap enables brands to offer their products in reusable containers, which allows them to provide accessible and affordable household essentials while minimizing single-use plastic consumption.
