Sari-Sari Stores to Convert to Digital With Upskilling
Consisting of over a million entities and providing livelihood to countless Filipinos, the government is bent on keeping the sari-sari store alive through a nationwide program that educates owners on new digital solutions to keep them relevant.
In the age of hypermarkets, superstores, and convenience stores, how can the humble sari-sari store fight for survival? For the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the answer lies in joining the digital bandwagon.
The DTI has launched a nationwide initiative to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by elevating them through digitalization and sustainable business practices. Dubbed “Tindahan Mo, E-Level Up Mo!” the Trade Department’s pilot program will educate sari-sari store owners on how to use various digital solutions to improve their operations and customer service.
“We aim to equip sari-sari store owners with the essential skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the digital age, enhance their operations, and contribute significantly to our nation’s economic progress,” explained DTI Secretary Fred Pascual.
Leveling Up Sari-Sari Stores
The pilot run will last around four months and will cover five modules. The first module called “e-Level Up ang Negosyo” discussed how to leverage digital technologies and solutions to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of sari-sari store operations.
Participants from all over the country, including Albay, Metro Manila, and even as far as Zamboanga Zibugay joined the launch in the various DTI Negosyo Centers nationwide, and were educated on topics such as how to create a cashless payment system, and how to establish digital services like cash-in, and bill payment systems.
Succeeding modules will discuss how to use digital solutions to improve daily operations, marketing, and finance, with the following specific topics:
- “e-Level Up ang Online Marketing” – Equips participants with strategies to reach new customers and expand their online presence through digital tools (July 24);
- “e-Level Up ang Puhunan” – Explores digital products to manage finances and grow business capital (August 28);
- “e-Level Up ang Paninda” – Optimizes product selection and caters to customer needs through digital applications (September 25); and
- “e-Level Up ang Operations” – Streamlines daily tasks and maximizes efficiency through digital solutions (October 23).
The nationwide program offers a comprehensive range of support from DTI, including business name registration process and relevant consumer protection policies.
“We believe that every sari-sari store plays a vital role in sustaining Filipino families and communities. By working together, we can elevate these micro businesses and pave the way for a Bagong Pilipinas where all MSMEs are thriving contributors to national development,” he added.
Despite modern advancements, sari-sari stores play a unique role in the Philippine setting and addresses a need especially in remote areas, where convenience stores are still absent or insufficient. The simple micro enterprise also offers additional livelihood and employment in a country that continues to suffer from a high unemployment rate.
“MSMEs play a crucial role in the Philippine economy, accounting for over 90% of businesses and employing millions of Filipinos. Sari-sari stores, with over 1.3 million establishments nationwide, serve as essential pillars of communities, providing daily necessities to a vast majority of the population,” the agency affirmed in a statement.
The government is encouraging all sari-sari store owners to take advantage of the free program, by participating in the webinar through the DTI Philippines Facebook page and YouTube channel. The technology challenged and those without computer and wifi access can visit their nearest DTI Negosyo Centers to join the livestream.
