Key Quotes
“Ako mismo kasi, I have a deep understanding of the technology, and I understand, at the same time, meron siyang [that it interplays with] business. Not necessarily how long will be the return.”
On bringing together business and technology
“Good thing that I built my business from scratch. It’s faster than what others built from legacy. It’ll take a while before they reach that point. So in terms of speed to the market, ‘yun, naiwan na sila. [They got left behind.].”
On building his business from scratch
“And then you need to understand also the market segment of the Philippines. We’re totally unique, that’s what I mentioned. We are the prepaid capital of the world—not just [in] Asia. The market affordability of the market is so important. Digital connectivity now is not essential anymore. It’s a right for the individual. But the problem is, they can’t afford [it].”
On understanding the market
“When we professionalized, we learned a lot. That’s the big difference. If you want to scale [your business]—become one of the big ones—you need to be ready [for] the company to be professionalized. You need to hire good people.”
On how to scale your business
“So just stay focused. Very important kasi minsan nasubukan ko rin na nagfail. Alam ko yung ginagawa ko tapos nag-ibang linya na naman ako. Nagfail ako. Balik ulit ako dito sa industry. That’s a lesson learned. From when that happened to me… I went to manufacturing and totally bumalik ako dito at hindi ko na binitawan. So staying focused is more important.”
[Translation: So just stay focused. It’s very important because I’ve faced failure. I know what I’m doing now, but then I change lanes and fail. Then I went back to the industry. That’s a lesson learned. From when that happened to me, I went to manufacturing and totally went back to tech and never left ever since. So staying focused is more important.]
