Here’s How Globe’s New Mobile Game Encourages Sustainable Practices
Climate Champions is a new mobile game that encourages Globe’s customers to take part in climate action—one sustainable gameplay at a time.
With rising temperatures and sea levels, melting polar ice caps, and a more intense heat wave upon all of us, it is certain—climate change is upon us. In fact, this global crisis has become a pressing issue for many countries, especially since scientists predict that this will be detrimental in the long run.
Given these circumstances, many companies have taken action to help the environment by initiating sustainability programs like reducing single-use plastics and packaging, modifying production processes in order to emit less waste or emissions, conserving energy and water, and so much more.
And the same applies to companies here in the Philippines, like Globe.
Gaming for the Environment
As a leader in sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, Globe continues to push for climate education and action. Thus, the telecommunications company launched Climate Champions—a new mobile game that encourages its millions of customers to make sustainable choices in their consumption of goods and services.
The launch of Climate Champions is part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)—specifically the SDG 13 on Climate Action, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Principles, the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Business Ambition for 1.5°C, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Race to Zero campaign.
“We have always believed that gaming in the Philippines goes beyond gameplay. Globe Climate Champions empowers Filipinos to live sustainably by breaking down the long-term aspiration into short-term actions, all through a gamified experience that encourages conscious daily life changes,” says Ralph Aligada, Head of Globe Gamers and Esports.
Globe Climate Champions: How it Works
“Responding to the risks and effects of climate change is a shared responsibility. This game aims to raise awareness on what actions contribute to caring for the environment,” says Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability, and Corporate Communications Officer.
Designed as a mobile running game, Globe Climate Champions gives practical tips on how you can reduce carbon emissions in your everyday activities. How? By challenging players to run to the finish line at the shortest possible time—with the chance to receive speed boosts by picking up trash along the way.
What’s more, you can shorten their run time by selecting eco-friendly choices during the lifestyle quiz at the end of each round. Learning trivia on how to better care for the environment is an added bonus, too!
And what’s a game without prizes? The more rounds you play, the more rewards you unlock. These prizes encourage you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle by shifting to digital transactions.
The new Globe Climate Champions mobile game can be accessed through the New GlobeOne, GCash, and the KonsultaMD apps. Team Globe of Good brand ambassadors June Mar Fajardo and Kuya Kim Atienza are some of the first advocates to invite the public to play the Globe Climate Champions mobile game.
Start Your Sustainability Journey with Globe
Aside from the debut of Globe Climate Champions, the telecommunications company recently kickstarted its nationwide search for citizens who champion sustainable practices to be part of its Globe Kali ‘Kada program.
“As we launch our nationwide search for Kali ‘Kada, we are sending the message that anyone with a true heart for the environment can be a champion for change. We are excited to help uncover a new breed of changemakers who will inspire others to commit to a more sustainable lifestyle,” explains RG Orense, Globe Digital and Social Channel Strategy Head.
Even within its operations, Globe has been active in helping the environment. To date, the company has deployed more than 8,500 Green Network Solutions nationwide in order to reduce its operational emissions. Likewise, 14 key facilities have shifted to renewable energy through Retail Electricity Supply Agreements (RESA) with renewable energy suppliers.
Moreover, Globe invests in innovative climate tech solutions that employees and customers can use to help contribute to climate action—just like the Globe Climate Champions mobile game.
“As we continue to operationalize our climate action strategies and aggressively move towards our goal of Net Zero by 2050, we encourage our customers to contribute to caring for the environment in their own way,” says Crisanto.
He goes on to add, “As part of our commitment to uplift Filipino lives, the Globe Group has committed to operate responsibly and help make the Philippines a livable and sustainable nation for generations to come.”
