The role of artificial intelligence (AI) within the workplace and the job market has caused significant debate these past years. Microsoft is adding to the discourse through the release of the 2024 Work Trend Index in partnership with LinkedIn. 

Having surveyed 31,000 people across 31 different countries, the report provides a deeper understanding of how AI is reshaping both work and the labor market. Specifically, the report shows the impact AI already has on the job market and gives insights that can help both employers and employees. 

While many fear that the continued rise of AI means that many people will lose their jobs, the 2024 Work Trend Index indicates the opposite. Instead of fearing AI, many employees believe having the right AI-related skills will help them remain competitive in the job market. 

“While AI and job loss are top of mind for some, our data shows more people are eyeing a career change, there are jobs available, and employees with AI skills will get first pick,” Microsoft said. 

Concerns About Finding Talent 

The report likewise highlights specific hiring trends that both employers and employees should be mindful of as AI continues to rise. One such trend that became apparent is that leaders are concerned that there is not enough talent to fill open roles in 2024.

Adding AI Skills to LinkedIn Profiles

The 2024 Work Trend Index also shows that, as of late 2023, there has been a 142x increase in LinkedIn members adding AI-related skills to their profiles. These include those that pertain to Copilot and ChatGPT. 

Given that 66% of leaders say they will not hire someone without AI skills, it is understandable why professionals want to highlight such skills in their profiles. These days, having AI skills increases a professional’s chances of being hired, especially since 71% of leaders are more inclined to hire someone with these skills despite having less experience. 

AI Upskilling 

Despite the fact that many leaders across different industries put a high value on AI skills, the report shows that only 39% of users have received any AI training from their companies. This has led to professionals taking matters into their own hands by upskilling on their own. 

The 2024 Work Trend Index highlights the 160% increase seen in the participation of non-technical professionals in LinkedIn Learning courses. According to Microsoft, this is their way of improving their AI aptitude.
